In an effort to re-enter the low-cost tablet market, Microsoft has announced the Surface Go tablet. Designed along the lines of the Surface Pro, this new, low-cost variant features a 10-inch display and runs Windows 10.Priced at $399, Redmond's new hardware combines the functionality of a tablet with the power of a PC.
It is the thinnest and most elegant Surface model to date, measuring just 8.3mm wide. It is a lightweight tablet weighing 1.15 lbs, making it 31% lighter than the larger Surface Pro. It features a 10-inch, 1800×1200 PixelSense display with a 3:2 aspect ratio. It was created to compete with other low-cost tablets like the iPad Air 2 and is equipped with the Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y processor with 4GB and 8GB RAM options.
Speaking of visuals, nothing has changed in the latest iteration of the Surface lineup, aside from the physical size. The corners are a bit more rounded, and with the built-in kickstand, the Surface Go features a front-facing camera with facial recognition capabilities.
However, Microsoft's backlit keyboard cover will be sold separately, and you'll have to spend another $99 if you want to get it. The Surface Go also supports the Surface Stylus Pen, which also costs $99. So if you opt for the additional accessories, it won't be as economical as the company claims.
Pre-orders began immediately after the tablet was announced, and shipping is scheduled to begin in August.
