3D printingis starting to find application in more and more sectors, and medicine could not be left out of all this.
Scientists at Newcastle University in the UK say they have created the first 3D human corneas. Using a combination of unique “bio-inks” and corneal cells, they can 3D print corneas in less than ten minutes.
If their methods gain medical approval, 3D cornea printing could significantly benefit the millions of people in need of transplants and those suffering from vision impairment due to corneal injury.
The cornea is the outermost lens of the eye, protecting it and providing much of its focusing capabilities. The cornea is durable, but injury can cause pain and vision loss. Infectious eye disorders can also affect the cornea, causing blindness.
A 2016 study of corneal transplants worldwide found that only one corneal transplant was available for every 70 patients. The study authors concluded that biotechnology could play a “substantial” role in alleviating this need.
Newcastle scientists created a “bio-ink” from the substances alginate and collagen. They then mixed it with human corneal cells. They then printed the corneas in concentric circles, where the stem cells grew around the bio-ink.
“Many groups around the world are searching for the ideal ‘bio-ink’ to make this process possible,” said Professor Che Connon. “Our unique gel – a combination of alginate and collagen – keeps stem cells alive while producing a material that is stiff enough to hold its shape but soft enough to be removed from a 3D printer nozzle.”
However, the study authors said it will likely be years before patients can start receiving 3D-printed corneas. This study was essentially a proof of concept.
