Google Search & Maps; results independent of domains

Google announced a change yesterday that affects users of the company's Maps and Search services.

The change affects users of the search service on mobile and desktop, as well as anyone who has access to the company's Maps. How? It collects local results for users regardless of the top-level domain they use.Google

What does this mean?

Google used the content it collected from your searches and used it to add and display them in a specific country, e.g. if a user from Greece searched via the domain google.gr. Google Search & Maps; results independent of domainsThe same was true for the company's mapping service (Google Maps). So until today, top level domains allegedly determined which results the services would see and which users would receive.

This process has been changed by Google. So from today, users of specific Google services will get local results, regardless of the domain they use, or the Google application they open.

Therefore, Greeks who open google.com will receive Greek results for their searches regardless. The same applies even if you open the site using the browser's incognito mode or the google.com/ncr.

Google lists the country service you're using at the bottom of the page. The company has removed the option to switch to a different country service from the search results page and moved it to settings.

So to change Google Search to another region:

Open the Google search domain you want to use, e.g. google.com.
Select Settings – Search Settings from the bottom of the page.
Towards the bottom of the page that opens you will see the “current region” option in the region you want to get results from.
Then click the save button.

The same process can be followed for Google Maps. The main difference is that you need to click on the menu icon when you are on the Google Maps website and select Search Settings. Everything else is the same.

Why did Google make this change? According to the company, it is to “ensure more relevant results based on your location” and to “be more consistent with how Google already manages” its services on other platforms like YouTube or Blogger.
