Apple: iPhone 8, iPhone X not at risk of unexpected shutdown

Apple clarified in a letter sent to the US Senate that newer iPhone models such as the iPhone 8 and iPhone X do not require any specific power management that would reduce their performance since the company has adopted special systems to prevent unexpected shutdowns.

The company had acknowledged the iPhone in late December with iOS 10.2.1, which affected the performance of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone SE with degraded batteries. The same changes were then incorporated into iOS 11 to target the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.Apple

In a response to Senator John Thune, chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, Apple says it has turned to other systems to deal with unexpected outages on the latest generation iPhones and as a result, such a performance throttling would not be necessary.

“All iPhone models have basic performance management to ensure that the battery and overall system are operating successfully while all internal components are protected. In the event of high temperatures, performance management ensures that the device remains within safe limits. This basic performance management is required for safety and expected operation and cannot be disabled,” a company spokesperson said.

The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X models include hardware updates that enable a more advanced performance management system that allows iOS to prevent and avoid unexpected shutdowns.

Apple does not provide any other details about the new technologies, but it seems that the company does not want to make the same mistake twice and use a slowdown mechanism in its new generation devices.
