BlackBerry has revealed that it will no longer provide monthly security updates for the BlackBerry Priv smartphone. The Priv has been around for more than two years, and BlackBerry had said it would support the device for two years after its launch.
The company said the smartphone will continue to be covered by some warranties and if there are any critical vulnerabilities, it will work with its partners to fix them.
“More than 24 months ago, when we introduced the first Android, we committed to providing monthly software updates for PRIV for two years. We kept our word and delivered on that commitment, even though in reality, PRIV’s built-in security didn’t need many of the updates we did with our partners, like Google and Qualcomm.
After 2 years, we will no longer provide monthly updates to promote PRIV.”

The BlackBerry Priv marked a significant change for the iconic brand, as it was the first device to run on the Android operating system. The Priv, which was released in November 2015, combined BlackBerry’s renowned security features with the flexibility and breadth of the Android ecosystem. The device featured a unique slide-out keyboard, offering users both a touchscreen and a physical keyboard experience. In addition, it featured a 5.4-inch dual-curved display, an 18MP rear camera, and robust battery life, making it a versatile and powerful smartphone. The introduction of the Priv symbolized BlackBerry’s effort to merge its legacy of secure communications with modern smartphone capabilities, aiming to serve both business professionals and everyday consumers.
