Microsoft: While Apple is usually the preferred target of patent infringement lawsuits around the world, it has recently become apparent that attention can easily shift to other major high-tech companies.
This time, Microsoft will have to face Lemaire Illumination Technologies LLC, which alleges that the Lumia 950 infringes on some of its patents covering LED technology.
According to publications, the court documents mention a total of three patents that relate to LED lighting for mobile phone screens.
Microsoft has not commented on the news, but Lemaire doesn't seem to be giving up, as she is already targeting other major companies for patent infringement, including LG.
Going back to 2012, LED Tech Development, a company that Lemaire Illumination Technologies bought a year later, launched a lawsuit against Apple for violating four patents in products like the iPad and MacBook Pro.
The funny thing is that Microsoft is suddenly in a legal battle over a product that has already been abandoned since the company no longer makes the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. The giant recently acknowledged that Windows 10 Mobile has entered maintenance mode, with no new features or hardware planned for the platform.
For information, the Lumia 950 series is the company's latest flagship and was officially launched in October 2015 along with a number of other products, including the Microsoft Band 2. The device was discontinued without us ever knowing the reason.
It remains to be seen how Microsoft will respond to these allegations.
