Here's why Apple removed 3D Touch app switching in iOS 11

Anyone who has updated to iOS 11 may be surprised by the fact that switching between apps is not as easy as it was in iOS 10.

Although double‑pressing the «Home» button still works for displaying multiple tasks, Apple has removed the 3D Touch feature that allowed you to switch between apps.

It may have been one of the lesser known features of 3D Touch, but by pressing the left edge of the screen, you can bring up the multitask view that allows you to quickly switch to your recently used apps.

However, this feature was removed after the iOS 11. While some speculate that it may have been removed because it wasn't used very often, we now know the real reason, thanks to Apple's iOS head himself, Craig Federighi.

According to an email sent to a disappointed iOS user, which was first reported by the Mac blog MacRumors, the feature was removed due to “technical limitation», but will be restored in a future update.

Here is his response, as reported by MacRumors:

“Unfortunately, we had to temporarily drop support for this feature due to a technical limitation. We will bring it back in an upcoming iOS 11.x update.

Thank you (and sorry for the inconvenience)!

– Craig»

There is no explanation for what exactly the technical issue is or when this update will arrive, but we are certainly ready for when it happens.
