Samsung Gear: Samsung appeared at IFA in Berlin and presented two wearables, two new different models of the Gear Smartwatch: the Gear Sport and the Gear Fit 2 Pro.
Both devices are optimized for tracking the owner's activity, although they also come with features that allow them to work with Samsung smartphones. However, Samsung's smartwatches also work with iPhones, although you won't be able to enjoy all of their features.
The Samsung Gear Sport is the model that looks more like a watch. It features a 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360×360 pixels and Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
The device is powered by a 1.0 GHz dual-core chip paired with 768MB of RAM and 4GB of storage. It runs on a 300 mAh battery and comes with the standard wireless charging system used in all Samsung mobile devices.
The Gear Sport has a GPS sensor, so it can track your workout without needing a smartphone to provide mapping capabilities.
It also integrates an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a barometer, an HR monitor and a light sensor, while in terms of connectivity it has support for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC.
The device will be available in black and blue and is IP68 certified for diving up to 50 meters. It has MIL_STD-810G calibration for shock-proofing. No specific information has been given about the price and availability, but it is expected that the device will be available soon.
The Gear Fit 2 Pro obviously has a much sportier look and features the typical Gear Fit design that brings it closer to an activity band than a smartwatch.
Compared to the standard Gear Fit 2, the Pro model has improved water resistance, with the device being able to withstand depths of up to 50 meters. This makes it suitable for swimming, and Samsung has partnered with Speedo to develop a swim tracking app that will come pre-installed on the device.
The rest of the specs remain unchanged: a 1.5-inch Super AMOLED display, a GPS sensor, and a 200mAh battery that should easily last you a day, unless you use the GPS a lot every day. The Gear Fit 2 Pro will be available on August 31st for $199.
