It's no secret that Windows often fails to install updates released by Microsoft. In most cases, the problem comes from the Windows Update service. Many times, restarting the service can solve the problem, and the update installation process can continue.
This can be done in several ways, including from your system's list of services (search for Services in the Start menu and press Enter, find Windows Update and select the Restart option), but there is also a much easier way from the Command Prompt or PowerShell.
Below we will see two different commands. To run them you will need to open Command Prompt or PowerShell with administrator privileges. (In the search, type cmd or powershell and when the icon you are interested in appears, right-click on it and “open as administrator”)
First of all, we will stop the Windows Update service: copy and paste the following command:
net stop wuauserv
If you restart your computer, the Windows Update service will start automatically. Otherwise, you can use the following command to start the service:
net start wuauserv
The above commands are only for restarting the Windows Update service, and not for resetting it, as a reset is a much more complex process that includes many other commands.
We know that many times a simple restart of the Windows Update service helps in many cases to proceed with Windows 10 updates that are stuck during the download process. The above solution does not work in 100 percent of cases.
In fact, it has been proven that sometimes it does not work when trying to install cumulative updates and in this case the only thing we can do is wait for Microsoft itself to provide a solution.
