The research firm IHS Markit conducted an analysis that revealed the best-selling smartphone in the world last year. According to the firm, Apple's iPhone 6s surpassed all competing smartphones since last year and landed in the top spot.
Apple's iPhone 6s was the most popular smartphone last year, followed by the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7, according to the research firm that tracks quarterly shipment data for more than 350 smartphone models.
Samsung's Galaxy S7 Edge landed in fifth place, followed by the affordable Galaxy J3 and a range of all the other Samsung smartphones, including the Galaxy S7, the Samsung phablet flagship, and the Galaxy Note 7 is not mentioned in the study.
The phone was recalled last year due to faulty batteries that caused the devices to overheat. Samsung eventually pulled the plug on the device and focused on promoting the Galaxy S7 as the company's flagship. That will change on March 29th, when the new Galaxy S8 is announced.
The research company does not display the shipping estimates but the map shows that about 60 million iPhone 6s were shipped while the Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy J3 (2016), Galaxy J5, Galaxy S7 and J7 were distributed to about 25 million users.
Interestingly, Huawei is the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, but it was not mentioned in the study. The Oppo A53 is the only smartphone not manufactured by Samsung or Apple and it appears to be very high in the smartphone market in 2016 with around 25 million units.
The brand is quite popular in markets like China and India. It's worth noting that the figures are estimates and might not reflect actual sales. But it's safe to say that Apple's products appear to have been more popular last year than premium smartphones .
