Months after the Galaxy Note 7 recall and discontinuation , Samsung has released the results of its investigation last month. The Korean company attributed the device's explosions to two types of battery malfunctions.
The Korean government, for its part, conducted its own investigation and its findings confirmed the results released by Samsung. The Note 7 were caused by defective batteries and the Korean government intends to strengthen battery safety measures and mobile devices in general.
"Batteries were found that caused the explosion due to factors, but no other defect was found in the device," the Ministry of Industry stated in its report.
The Korea Institute of Technology and Standards’ investigation included 14 overheated smartphones, 46 unaffected ones and 169 batteries belonging to Samsung. “The Galaxy Note 7 battery, unlike other models, has anode materials on both poles. The high impact of the two poles and the incorrect attachment of the insulating tapes are likely to have caused the explosions,” the ministry said. The investigation also took into account the power control circuit, the battery protection circuit, the internal pressure, the space between the battery and other components inside the phone.
The Korean Ministry of Energy announced after the investigation that it plans to revise laws to strengthen battery safety measures. Samsung , for its part, revealed a series of 8 test checks that will be carried out on smartphones during the production process.
Finally, we should note that the Korean government will impose new safety standards with tests that include overload, mechanical shock and vibration.
