The Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) has created the first 3D Printed pedestrian bridge, which is now located in the Castilla-La Mancha Park in Alcobendas, just south of Madrid, Spain.
The 3D Printed bridge has been created using parametric models to reflect not only the "complexity of nature's forms", but also the optimization of the distribution of raw materials, to create the strongest possible structure and uses sand to bind one layer after another of solid rock used to build it.
The 3D Printed Alcobendas Bridge is a first in the world of civil engineering and the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) calls the creation a "landmark for the construction sector at an international level.":
Computer-aided architectural design also allows for maximizing structural efficiency, being able to allocate material only to the parts where it is necessary, with absolute freedom in forms, preserving the porous material, thanks to the application of generative algorithms and challenging traditional construction techniques. It is a "miracle" of technology. For an exquisite collaboration between technology and architecture.
