Microsoft is often criticized for resetting default apps in Windows 10 after new OS updates. Today, Vivaldi browser CEO Jon von Tetzchner decided to publish another complaint about the company's inappropriate behavior.
Specifically, von Tetzchner says that Microsoft is very aggressively promoting the Edge browser in Windows 10, which makes it extremely difficult for users to use third-party browsers.
von Tetzchner explains that Microsoft resets the default browser after every Windows 10 update. The Vivaldi CEO goes on to say that resetting the browser a user wants is not that easy, and beginners could find it very difficult to do so.
von Tetzchner even mentioned an incident that happened to a 72-year-old man whose browser was changed to Microsoft Edge after upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 10.
“I understand that Microsoft is making a big deal about Edge because so few people use it, but instead of developing a better browser, they are forcing users to use it,” Tezchner says.
Continuing, he again states that he understands Microsoft's struggle to market Edge to as many people as possible, but emphasizes that forcing users in such an aggressive way is not the right solution.
“We have to accept that some users prefer software created by other companies. It is our responsibility to be fair to users. Stripping users of their ability to choose limits progress. What should drive us is developing great products.”
Indeed, Microsoft reportedly continues to use very aggressive promotional practices for its products, and in addition to Tetzchner's complaint, we have all noticed that the company displays pop-up windows right on the desktop that try to convince users to try the application.
von Tetzchner:
“It’s time to do the right thing. Stop stealing the default browser of user choice and compete on the merits.”
