The iPhone 7 Plus may be more waterproof than Apple is advertising. A new story out of Russia claims the company's latest smartphone can survive much longer in water than the IP67 rating requires.
We don't know if this is an indirect advertisement by Apple for its iPhone 7 plus, in order to support the phone's IP67 specification. We remind you that this specification refers to dust and water resistance (level 6 for dust and level 7 for water) and confirms that a device can withstand water for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 meter.
In a video posted to Instagram, a Russian man claims he dropped his iPhone 7 Plus into a hole he had dug in the frozen river to fish. Because it was late, the phone remained there overnight, submerged in 4 °C (39 °F) water, until a friend in a wetsuit dove in and found it at the bottom of the river. There is no mention of how deep the river is at this point, but we can assume from the video that it is at least two meters.
According to ykt.ru, the phone, to everyone's surprise, came out of the water powered on and fully functional with a battery indicator of 19%. Its owner informs us that when he lost it, it had about 35% battery.
We don't recommend that you become a water tester yourself, following the example of the Russian owner. However, if you accidentally drop your phone in water, we would like a report on the condition you found it in afterwards.
