As we all know, Sony has been the underdog in the smartphone market in 2016, with its Xperia line failing to compete with the big players like Samsung , LG, and Huawei. However, the Japanese company is hoping to change that in the coming years.
Sony needs to make some major changes to the design of its future smartphones, judging by the lukewarm presentation of the Xperia X Performance lineup. Clearly, these changes need some time to prepare, so we should expect them from 2018 onwards.
According to a Japanese source, one of the changes the company is going to introduce is the release of Xperia phones with OLED screens. Their launch is expected in 2018, specifically in February at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) and in September at the IFA trade show. This information has not yet been confirmed by the company itself.
According to the report, OLED screens will be exclusive to the Xperia series, while the rest of the devices will continue to feature LCDs. Furthermore, it is likely that the new OLED screens will be similar to those already offered on the A1 series TVs, with some modifications possibly required.
What different will an OLED screen offer?
Unlike LCD, the new screens offer better black color and a higher level of contrast.
The unfortunate thing is that while Sony is planning to release the first smartphone with an OLED screen, rival manufacturers (Samsung, LG) have already released foldable smartphones.
