“Britney Spears has died in an accident! We will tell you more soon.” This was the announcement on the Twitter account @SonyMusicGlobal, which belongs to Sony Music. It took a corresponding tweet from CNN to deny the news.

The hack was carried out by the OurMine group, known for account breaches like this one. In 2016 alone, the group gained unauthorized access to the accounts of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and others. The OurMine group also took over the management of the website BuzzFeed in October. And just last week, hackers gained access to the Twitter accounts of Netflix and Marvel.
