For the average person, lifting a spoon to their mouth may seem like a simple, everyday act that doesn't require much thought or effort. But it can be an elusive luxury for many people with mobility issues.
Now, a new line of eating utensils is helping people with limited mobility regain their independence in eating, through high-tech sensors, computers and motors.
The line, called Liftware, features two utensils designed to help people with tremors, limited mobility, and other issues that could affect a person's ability to eat on their own.
The first product, called Liftware Steady, has sensors that detect involuntary hand movements, compensating for shakiness with supplemental vibrations to keep the level . The second product, called Liftware Level, bends at the neck of the utensil, allowing for improved spoon flex. It also uses sensors to detect movements that could tip the utensil too far and cause spills.
The creators of Liftware say the utensils, which can be used with a spoon or fork, are specifically designed to help people living with cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, Parkinson's disease and mobility problems after a stroke.
To develop the tools, the Liftware team worked directly with these groups of people, testing the product with the help of volunteers.
The devices, which run on a rechargeable battery, can be used continuously for up to an hour. The product sells for $195 along with a spoon, while additional accessories cost $34.95 each.
For people with disabilities, who are often unable to work, this price could potentially be a deterrent due to income constraints. However, the creators say the ability users gain makes them feel much more independent, and that makes it much more worthwhile.
