Mehmet, a well-known Turkish hacker, recently launched a DDoS and invites all interested parties to bring down political websites and then be rewarded for it.
According to a discovery by security firm Forcepoint, the competition is called a “gamification” of DDoS and each participant receives access to the “Balyoz” tool which helps them attack websites from just one machine. The winners will not only be rewarded for their feats but whoever manages to run the DDoS program for the longest time will earn more points.
For every ten minutes of attack, participants have the right to negotiate their reward. Some of their prizes include the standalone version of the “Balyoz” tool and the ‘click-fraud’ bots that are used to generate revenue from subscription websites. In addition, there is an informative scoreboard that allows participants to track their progress.
The contest mainly targets the political websites of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, the People's Democratic Party of Turkey, the Armenian Genocide website, and the Kurdistan Workers' Party. However, participants are also allowed to suggest other websites to attack.
The interesting thing about the case is that the “Balyoz” tool can only be activated and infect websites when the user is out of competition.
Thegoal of this competition is to create a network of infected computers that can be used in the future to launch larger DDoS attacks.
It has not yet been clarified how many participants there will be and whether any websites have already been infected, although Forcepoint is closely monitoring the competition's activities.
