Digital photo frames are nothing new. You may have seen them used in advertisements or perhaps you've seen one on a shelf in someone's home. But you've probably never confused one with a painting.
Now that could be the case. Electric Objects is debuting the EO2, a new digital photo frame with a matte screen, intended for the sole purpose of introducing people to the world of art.
Electric Objects has intentionally designed the display to be slim, so that it looks more like a painting on the wall than an actual monitor. The 1080p HD LCD display and discreet Wi-Fi antennas also help it blend in seamlessly with the rest of your decor. Not to mention, whatever piece of artwork you choose, it will illuminate the display in the same way that the lights in your apartment illuminate the space, thanks to a light sensor that works to match the ambiance of your home.
The EO2 is controlled via an app that lets you choose between portraits by a range of artists. Some are contemporary artists, commissioned for the app, and some are your favorite artists, like Vincent Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock, who are featured in museums like the Getty Museum.
There are also paintings by users themselves. Anyone who has the app can upload their own works and share them with the app's community. Their work could potentially be displayed in thousands of homes.
Jessie Goldberg, director of public relations for Electric Objects, says she likes to think of it as “the Netflix of visual art.” The company’s CEO, Jake Levine, further explains that the archives of many of these museums are online, and it would be a shame if everyone couldn’t enjoy them since they were created for that purpose.
His mission for this project is to make art more accessible in the home. And if Netflix is their model, the EO2 frame could be a big step towards merging the worlds of art and home decor.
