Hack the Pentagon: White hats discovered over 100 vulnerabilities in Pentagon infrastructure as part of a bug bounty program.
Around 1,400 hackers participated in the Hack the Pentagon bug bounty. The program awarded $14,000 for disclosures of various vulnerabilities.
US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter told the Defense One conference held in Washington DC on Friday that bug bounties have reduced the cost of discovering vulnerabilities.
“They help us be safer at minimal cost,” Carter said.
So it seems that the Pentagon has managed, with very little money, to further strengthen its digital defenses and national security in general.
Hackers hunting for bugs had to be vetted before being allowed to breach Pentagon systems, and particularly sensitive departments were left out of the scope of the bug bounty.
Carter also revealed in a speech that the Pentagon will seek to track top IT professionals in information security and grant them high-ranking positions in the military.
