Well, the rumors were true: Facebook Messenger can send SMS text messages but only from Android devices for now, as can Google Hangouts.
It seems that Messenger wants to become an app for all types of communication and it seems to be doing just fine.
According to David Marcus, Facebook's product manager, it won't just be a simple texting app.
You'll also be able to send voice clips, stickers, or share your location in addition to the usual features like photos and videos.
The introduction of SMS in Facebook Messenger (which was one of the few advantages that Hangouts had) shows the company's intentions. Google's Hangouts after this move will probably not survive.
You can think of the new addition as another way Facebook is making sure no one leaves its ecosystem. The update has already started rolling out to “most countries,” but there’s no mention of an iOS app.
