WhatsApp is also preparing. Apple's battle with the FBI is being closely watched by all smartphone communication companies, as there is concern about security breaches by each government. At least that is the optimistic scenario, as the Snowden revelations indicate that secret services are behind every communication on the internet. 
One of the companies that has been affected by these issues in the past, WhatsApp plans to provide end-to-end encryption for voice calls as well as group chats.
According to a publication in The Guardian newspaper, an official announcement from WhatsApp is expected very soon, in which the company will confirm security improvements to its instant messaging service.
WhatsApp has already added message encryption to Android and iOS devices, but in the coming weeks, it will extend it end-to-end, to voice calls and group chats.
The same publication points out that WhatsApp's encryption will be based on code developed by a famous privacy evangelist, Moxie Marlinspike.
This particular encryption code has been tested many times by external security experts, and appears to suit the needs of the WhatsApp application.
The company's founder, Jan Koum, has always said that users should expect security to be a given, not a bonus.
