A case of child pornography via the Internet was investigated by the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate, within the framework of targeted actions and investigations, in collaboration with foreign authorities, to combat the phenomenon.

A corresponding case file was filed for the case, with immediate proceedings, against a 40-year-old Greek national, in the Athens area.

Specifically, the investigation into the case began after an online check on a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing network for possession and distribution of child pornography. In this context, the electronic traces of individuals who possessed and shared a specific file of child pornography were recorded. The check resulted in an electronic trace belonging to a user within Greek territory.

The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate conducted a thorough digital investigation and analysis of the data and elements of the case, while an Order and Resolution were issued by the competent Prosecution Authority to lift the confidentiality of communications.

Through a methodical police and digital investigation and the analysis of electronic traces, the owner of the disputed Internet connection was identified.
Subsequently, a team of police officers carried out a surprise search yesterday (19-11-2015) morning, in the presence of a Judicial Officer, at the 40-year-old's home in Athens. Through an on-site search of the 40-year-old's digital media, it was determined that he was in possession of hundreds (1,170) files containing child pornography, which depicted minors, under the age of fifteen, engaged in sexual acts with each other and with adults.

As part of the investigation, three (3) internal computer hard drives were found and seized, which will be sent to the Criminal Investigations Directorate for laboratory tests.

The perpetrator, with the completed case file, is brought before the Athens Criminal Court Prosecutor.
