Harvard University system administrators recently discovered unauthorized activity on the university's networks! The university immediately issued a public warning - an appeal to all concerned, urging them to change their account passwords.
The intrusion was discovered on June 19th on the networks of the School of Arts and Sciences and Central Administration. At this time, the identity of the perpetrator remains unknown, just as the purpose of the breach remains unknown.
In the release disclosing the incident, Chancellor Alan Garber and Executive Vice President Katie Lapp state that there is no indication that personal information, research data, or PIN credentials of the University's systems have been leaked.
However, the attacker or attackers may have intercepted usernames and passwords to access individual computers, as well as email accounts of students and academics at the University.
So everyone from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Harvard Divinity School, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, or Central Administration should immediately change the password they use to log in.
Those who had access to the Graduate School of Design, Harvard Graduate School of Education, Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, or Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health are asked to create new passwords for their Office 365 or Icemail accounts.
Harvard has now called in outside information security experts to investigate the case. The FBI has also been notified to oversee the investigation.
