Microsoft is reportedly developing a new service called Microsoft WiFi. Details were leaked today by microsoftwifi.com. While the website no longer lists details, when it was online it described the service and said it would offer “free Internet access around the world” so users could be “productive on the go.”
The Microsoft WiFi website was originally pointed out by Twitter user h0x0d, the same person who recently revealed Microsoft Earn.
The page stated:
Don't waste time filling forms with personal information or managing different carriers to get connected. Sign in once and you are done: you will automatically be connected to a vast range of WiFi providers around the world.
VentureBeat asked the company for comment on the new service, and a Microsoft spokesperson said:
“We can confirm that we are working on a new service, called Microsoft WiFi, that will bring free Wi-Fi to millions of people. We look forward to sharing more details with you when the service is available.”
The Microsoft WiFi app will be cross-platform. Before the website download, there were Microsoft WiFi downloads for Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.
After the announcement of the new service, Microsoft WiFi will only be available in:
- Active Skype WiFi subscribers (via Microsoft Work & Play Bundle or Surface 2 + Skype WiFi Bundle)
- To employees of companies using Microsoft Office 365
- Customers who received a special WiFi offer from Microsoft
Of course, with the launch of the service, we should expect various offers from Microsoft to promote the new product.
The Microsoft WiFi service appears to be the same idea as the pay-as-you-go service that automatically connects you to free public Wi-Fi hotspots.
But it seems to be more than just a rebranding, because it targets a much larger audience: 10 million Wi-Fi hotspots in 130 countries.
