Europol's cybercrime team has taken down the RAMNIT botnet, which had infected 3.2 million computers worldwide.
The NCA (National Crime Agency) team worked with their counterparts in the Netherlands, Italy and Germany to shut down the command and control servers used by the botnet.
RAMNIT It was used by scammers primarily to steal money from Windows users.
“This malware essentially gives criminals a backdoor so they can take control of your computer, access your images, passwords or other personal data. They also use it to distribute further spam messages or launch illegal attacks on other websites,” said Steve Pye of the NCA.
An analysis of the servers is currently underway and the investigation is ongoing, the NCA said. Europol was notified of the existence of RAMNIT by Microsoft.
