The end of an era for Oracle by Larry Ellison's departure from the position of CEO on Thursday, which marked the end of a tenure considered one of the most successful in business history.

Oracle Oracle Oracle

Ellison had served as CEO since 1977, the year he founded the company. Over the course of 35 years, under the leadership of Ellison, now 70, Oracle has grown into one of the world's largest database software companies and a leading provider of business applications.

Larry Ellison is considered one of Silicon Valley's most iconic visionaries, on a par with Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. According to the company, he will be replaced by Safra Katz and Mark Hurd, previously vice presidents, who will take on the roles of managing directors. Ellison will take on the roles of chairman of the board and chief technology officer of the company.

It is worth noting that the eccentric billionaire (his fortune is estimated at $51.4 billion) was a close friend of Steve Jobs, and is considered to have been, as a figure, an inspiration for Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Iron Man in the films of the same name (it is noted that he himself made a cameo appearance in Iron Man 2).
