More than 200 million Windows 8 licenses have been sold to date, about a year and a half since the official release of the operating system.

The news about Windows 8 sales comes from Tami Reller, Microsoft's Marketing VP, who revealed the sales figure in a recent speech.
It's no secret that Windows 8 isn't selling as well as Microsoft would like. While 200 million licenses is undoubtedly a large number when compared to the corresponding numbers for OS X and Linux, the number pales in comparison to Windows 7, which enjoyed much greater success and acceptance from the public since 2009.
The 200 million sales in the 16 months that Windows has been on the market means that Microsoft is selling 12.5 million licenses each month. The rate has decreased significantly since the last update on Windows 8 sales in May 2013, when it exceeded 100 million with an average of 16.6 million sales per month.
Comparing sales with Windows 7, the previous version of Windows recorded stable sales figures from the very first moment of its release with approximately 20 million sales per month and more than 240 million sales per year.
Finally, it should be noted that the 200 million Windows 8 sales relate to licenses that come with new computers and tablets as well as upgrades to Windows 8. The number does not include volume license sales to businesses and organizations, which constitute a significant share of Microsoft's sales.
