Bad news for all Tormail users. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has a complete copy of a Tormail server and is using it as part of its investigations.
According to recently unearthed court documents, the FBI cloned the entire email service database while investigating the Freedom Hosting.
In August 2013, when the FBI seized Tor network servers at Freedom Hosting, the feds gained access to every file of every anonymous website hosted on Freedom Hosting's servers, including the TorMail service (a service that allows anonymous sending and receiving of email).
New evidence uncovered by Wired suggests that the files in question are now being used in investigations to identify cybercriminals.
It is currently unknown how many users or how much data on the TorMail network is in the FBI's hands, but Wired reports that the feds know everything.
As stated on the TorMail website, the administrators refused to hand over information to the FBI, even when presented with a court order. But if all of the above is true, by cloning the server, those using the service can forget about the concept of anonymity.
