One of Wikipedia 's biggest goals is to expand its reach. This may sound strange since we know that it's one of the largest sites in the world. But even if every single one of us uses Wikipedia, there are still more than four billion people who can't access it because, apparently, they don't have an internet connection.
But almost everyone has a phone. Based on this fact, Wikipedia officials decided to offer free access to their website via mobile phones. How can this be made a reality? With SMS.
Wikipedia Zero is a light version of the site (no images, for example) that is offered for free. Wikipedia is working with mobile operators to offer the new service for free, as the amount of data transferred from the site to mobile phones will not be charged. “This partnership with Airtel will help Wikipedia provide access to 70 million new users in Africa, starting in Kenya,” Wikipedia says
