Wikipedia has decided to no longer allow its editors to write or rewrite articles using artificial intelligence (AI). The update, which was added to Wikipedia's guidelines late last week, states that articles written by AI often violate "many of Wikipedia's core content policies"That's why it's moving forward with the ban.

This change applies to the English version of Wikipedia, but it still allows editors to use AI in certain scenarios. This includes using large language models to “suggest key corrections” to their text, but only if they “don’t introduce their own content.” Editors can also use AI to translate articles from Wikipedia in another language into English, but they must follow the site’s rules on translations assisted by language models (which require editors to have sufficient knowledge of the source language to confirm the accuracy of the translation).

The new policy warns that some people “may have similar writing styles to the language models,” and editors will need to find more than just “stylistic or linguistic cues” to justify potential editing restrictions. “It is best to review the text for compliance with the core content policies and recent edits by the editor being reviewed,” the guidelines state.

Wikipedia editors have been struggling with AI-generated articles for months. The community has been forced to implement a new policy for “rapid deletion” of poorly written articles. The editors have also created WikiProject AI Cleanup, an initiative that aims to combat AI-generated content and help others identify it.

The most recent change to Wikipedia's guidelines was proposed by Chaotic Enby, sparking an extensive debate among editors. The proposal was eventually approved with "overwhelming support," concluding that the policy "targets clearly problematic issues with the use of language models, while still allowing room for what is considered decent use of them."
