Just weeks after launching the first Firefox OS, the ZTE Open and Alcatel OneTouch, Mozilla announced today that it plans to gradually expand the sale of Firefox OS smartphones to more markets.
Firefox OS devices are different from most smartphones in that they run on an open-source platform built largely on HTML5. Mozilla, the platform's creator, has said that devices running its software will be targeted at emerging markets, TNW reports .
Firefox OS phones are currently available in Spain, Colombia and Venezuela through Telefonica, and in Poland through Deutsche Telekom. Telefonica will begin distributing the devices in three Latin American markets in Q4 2013, while Deutsche Telecom has begun sales in Germany and will bring the first devices to Greece and Hungary soon. Mozilla also announced that Telenor has confirmed that it plans to launch the phones in Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro by the end of this year.
