Google's Gmail had some serious issues yesterday, resulting in a 12-hour ordeal for those trying to access their messages.
Following the incident, the company today apologized for the access problems, which it said affected about a third of emails routed through its servers.
Most messages, it should be noted, were not affected, about 71 percent. The remaining percentage experienced an average delivery delay of 2.6 seconds. However, about 1.5 percent of messages had a much longer delay, about two hours.
Google says in its message: “The message delivery delays were caused by a double network failure. This is a very rare case in which two separate network paths stopped working at the same time. The two network failures were unrelated to each other, but combined with Gmail’s reduced ability to deliver messages to users, starting at 16:54 Greek time, they are accumulating.”
The company is seeking to prevent any recurrence of such incidents in the future and intends to take measures in the coming weeks, increasing its network and backup capacity for Gmail.
