A leak from a chemical plant in central China is responsible for the death of thousands of fish in the country's Fuhe River.
Local authorities say that, to date, about 99,790 kilograms (100 tons or 220,000 pounds) of dead fish have been collected. Chances are they will collect a few more kilograms in the coming days.
A local fisherman told the newspapers: “The dead fish covered the entire river and looked like snowflakes.”
Water sampling results indicate that the ammonia concentration at the Fuhe River site near the chemical plant exceeded national standards.
Experts working with the local environmental agency have warned people living there not to eat the dead fish, as they carry a risk of developing various medical complications.
Fortunately, so far, authorities report that local drinking water sources have not been contaminated.
