IBM scientists are developing a new software system that will be able to support cognitive computing systems that interact more naturally with humans.
But what are cognitive computing systems? These systems can be trained with artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms. The possibilities for this new technology are described in the video below.
Researchers from IBM Research say that this technology allows for the creation of “applications that mimic the human brain’s abilities to perceive, act, and learn.” This means that new computers will deal with data and “think” more in the way that we humans do.
IBM explains that the programmable computing systems we use today were designed decades ago and are effective to a certain extent. But today, data is being generated on a global scale, and old technology is no longer sufficient.
That's why IBM is developing this new cognitive system to be able to create a software simulator that will have "a network of neurosynaptic nuclei," a model of a neuron that can process and calculate data like a human brain. This architecture will support next-generation systems that will behave more like biological beings, as Mashable reports.
IBM will present all the developments at the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks in Dallas this week.
The company hopes to create “a chip with ten billion neurons and one hundred trillion synapses” that consumes little power and has a very small volume. The company’s goal could mean a lot. For example, people could develop special glasses to help people with vision problems, which have “multiple sensors (auditory and video)” to process visual data. Since our eyes see a terabyte of data a day, according to IBM, powerful sensors could help people with vision problems see normally.
