NASA has created an interactive map of our solar system that shows the orbits of more than 1,400 known potentially hazardous asteroids ( PHAs ). According to NASA , the graphs show the orbits of only those asteroids that are larger than 140 meters in diameter and are within 7,500,000 kilometers of Earth.
The image is one of the products of NASA 's Near Earth Object Program , which is tasked with detecting and recording PHAs. While no government yet has a policy on how to respond to a potential collision, the new program aims to provide as much information as possible, believing that it is better to know the sooner something happens the more likely it is to happen. The website created by NASA is of particular interest, as it includes an interactive feature that allows visitors to discover the orbital characteristics and diagrams of PHA candidates.
