A comprehensive online survival guide, in the shadow of the PRISM, is freely published by Reporters Without Borders on the website WeFightCensorship.org. In the foreword to the publication, RSF addresses those who want to resist surveillance by governments or other interest groups that attempt to control information and silence dissent.
The guide is aimed at everyone and no special IT knowledge is required to gain “15 minutes of anonymity online” or to follow the tips for protecting your identity when using your mobile phone. The guide also includes Tails, an operating system “like Windows or MacOS” that was designed from the beginning to protect the user’s anonymity and privacy, based on Tor networks. It allows the user to use the Internet and visit almost any Internet destination anonymously, from any computer, without leaving traces of online activity, unless the user chooses otherwise.
The guide has been continuously enriched since June and includes the exchange of encrypted e-mail messages, the use of private tunnels on the Internet with encrypted communication (VPN). Also published are revealing information about the so-called metadata, data that accompanies documents that are often circulated over the Internet without the user's knowledge. Finally, the online survival guide describes the use and limitations of Tor.
