In an interview with the Guardian, Losse said that when he joined Facebook in 2005, each support staff member maintained a “master password,” which allowed them to log in as any Facebook and access all their messages and data.
He stated that staff needed to access accounts in order to manage and fix user issues, claiming that it was common practice when it was in its early stages.
But with many Facebook using the same password for multiple online accounts, this raises significant security concerns. However, Losse admitted that more secure forms of account support have since been created and Facebook has now confirmed that the social network has “very, very strict procedures” in place to control access to user passwords and information.
