Apple is investigating claims that tin used in its products comes from mines on Bangka Island in Thailand.
The complaint came from environmental group Friends of the Earth (FoE) and is pressuring Apple to identify the source of the metal used in soldering components in its devices. While the island region is one of the world's largest suppliers of tin, the mining conditions are far from ideal.
Landslides are a daily occurrence and threaten the lives of workers, not to mention the negative impacts the mine has on the local environment.
The same group successfully pressured Samsung to admit that it was sourcing tin from the same region last April.
For its part, Apple has commissioned an investigative committee to learn more and help fund a new study on mining in the area. Let's see.
