Safer Internet Day from Saferinternet.gr

Safer Internet Day is being celebrated with great fanfare this year on Tuesday, 5 February 2013, as part of the first 10-year anniversary celebration since its establishment. Safer Internet Day was first celebrated on 6 February 2004 in 16 countries, as part of the SafeBorders awareness campaign for a safer internet, a project funded by the European Commission's Safer Internet Framework Programme. In 2005, the Pan-European Network of National Information & Awareness Centres INSAFE took over the reins, and today the number of countries has surpassed all records, reaching 99 worldwide!

Over the years, the INSAFE Network has been addressing the different aspects of the Internet: from cyberbullying to the phenomenon of social networking and the convergence of generations. This year, it decided to choose a special theme with significant importance: “Ourrights and obligations in online worlds – Online rights and responsibilities”.

For this year’s 10th anniversary celebration of Safer Internet Day 2013, 217 organizations in 44 prefectures of Greece and Cyprus responded to the call of the Saferinternet.gr Action of the Hellenic Safer Internet Center, surpassing any previous record of participation. This year’s slogan of the day “Connect with respect! – Connect with prudence!” mobilized schools, municipalities, libraries, universities, cultural organizations, radio stations, companies and individuals to act as our Ambassadors and multiply our messages with speeches, plays, poems, paintings, workshops, posters and T-shirts. We thank them warmly.
