Kiddle is a safe search engine designed exclusively for children.
It's usually not a good idea to leave children, especially young ones, alone with a device that's connected to the Internet, as there are many strange and downright disturbing things on the internet that can shock even adults who are Internet "veterans.".
Even innocent search terms can return results that are not suitable for minors, and it really doesn't matter if you are next to your child when this happens, as you certainly wouldn't expect disturbing results to appear.
Search engines try to filter results by having Safe Search filters enabled by default to prevent inappropriate content from being returned to the user. However, it is easy to disable Safe Search on all major search engines, and there is always the possibility that search results will be inappropriate.
Kiddle combines Google's safe search filter with keyword phrase control. Basically, it prevents you from searching for specific words or phrases, and blocks certain sites from appearing in the results.
If you run a search for a blocked keyword, what it returns is an error message: “Oops, it looks like your query contained some bad words! Please try again!”.
However, after a few test searches using the “web” or “photos” tab, Kiddle returned good results or even better harmless results depending on the search term. Ultimately, however, it still seems to be overly restrictive when it comes to what is allowed and what is not.
Inappropriate keywords or websites that are still included in search results can be reported to Kiddle staff. It will take approximately one business day for the request to be reviewed and appropriate action taken.
Finally, the service's privacy policy is surprisingly brief, revealing that personal information is not collected.
