A Chrome hack for those who keep a lot of tabs open

Anyone who likes Chrome, including me, keeps a lot of tabs open just in case. However, this leads to consuming too much memory and ultimately slowing down your laptop’s performance. It can also affect its battery life.

Having all these tabs running can be so taxing on your laptop that closing these tabsis not your first choice. Closing them completely can cause you to miss something you intended to come back to later.

There's this clever little "hack" that can close tabs while keeping them open and reducing the load on your laptop.

  1. Click on the Chrome “Settings” button (three lines in the upper right corner, to the right of the URL field) and go to “More tools”.
  2. Hover over this button and click "Task Manager" in the new menu that appears.
  3. Here you will get a list of all the tabs running in your browser, along with information about how much memory they are using.
  4. By clicking the “Memory” button on the top bar, you can sort all the tabs to see which one is using the most.
  5. You can make the manager window a little bigger and increase the size of the columns, which displays information about all the tabs you have open.
  6. If you want to close some and free up memory, simply click on the tab and press the "End Process" button in the bottom-left.
  7. This will get rid of the page, replacing it with Chrome's "Aw, Snap" error warning.

The page with the "Aw, Snap" error won't consume any memory, but if you need to go back to it later, you can find it again among your tabs and simply refresh the page in question.

Web developer Primož Cigler says that by using this method to close some annoying tabs, he was able to double his laptop 's battery life with just a few clicks.

While we agree that this is a less than perfect solution, especially if laptop is old and every bit of battery life you have is important, you should definitely try this method.
