Instagram Bug on Android Makes Your Private Messages Visible

A new Instagram feature that allows multiple accounts comes with a warning for Android users: there's a bug that shares your personal notifications and direct messages with other users.

If you share access to an account with other Instagram users on Android, you may have noticed that your direct messages and notifications on your personal, non-shared account are also sent to them.

Specifically, let's say you and I each have a personal Instagram account and we each have access to a third, shared account. If someone sends me a direct message on my personal account, you may also receive a notification for that personal, direct message, even if it wasn't sent to you or our shared account.

According to Android Central, tapping on the notification doesn't give you access to the other person's account, and you can't reply to the messages, thankfully. Tapping on the notification that doesn't concern you will simply take you straight to your own Instagram account.

However, you can still see a fairly large chunk of private information if you encounter this bug, including comments and direct messages, and even be able to see who those direct messages are from.

This bug appeared with the update for Instagram that allows users to stay logged in to multiple accounts and easily interact with them. We're surprised that the bug wasn't caught sooner, given that the feature has been in testing on Android since November, but it doesn't seem to be happening to every Android user.

Android Central reached out to Instagram, which said it is “aware of this issue and is working on a resolution.”

However, an Instagram spokesperson, just yesterday, told Mashable that the bug has been fixed!
