A researcher at the University of Massachusetts has built a supercomputer by connecting 192 Playstation 3s

It all started in 2009 when University of Massachusetts researcher Gaurav Khanna built a supercomputer by connecting 16 Playstation 3 consoles.
Khanna's idea was to take advantage of the awesome processor of the Playstation 3 and so he connected 16 PS3s with the result being 10 times better than a regular desktop processor, while the flexibility of the PS3 allowed the scientists to choose the operating system they wanted, which was none other than Linux.

This achievement naturally attracted the interest of the US Department of Defense, which in 2010 asked Gaurav Khanna for help in creating a supercomputer consisting of 1760 consoles, donating him 176 PS3 consoles.
Thus, Gaurav Khanna's laboratory, which studies black holes, has 192 Playstaion 3 consoles (which are placed in a specially designed container so that they can be properly cooled) with a total value of 75 thousand dollars, with processing power 3 thousand times greater than that of a desktop processor on the market.
Finally, another 220 PS3 consoles are expected to be added in 2015..
