Facebook was one of the worst offenders when it came to battery drain on iOS devices.
Now, the company claims to have fixed the issue in the latest version of Facebook for iOS, offering an unusually detailed explanation as to why this happened.
According to Facebook, Ari Grant, the problem was twofold: First, the Facebook app had something called "CPU spin" in its code.
"CPU spin is like a kid in a car asking, 'Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?' with the question making no progress as you reach your destination. This repetitive process causes the app to consume more battery than intended," Grant wrote in a public Facebook post.
Secondly, the Facebook managed to feature poor audio sessions, causing unnecessary battery consumption.
“If you leave the Facebook app when watching a video, the audio session sometimes remains open, as if the audio app is playing silently. (…) The app doesn’t actually do anything while it’s running in the background, but it uses more battery just by being active,” Grant wrote.
Grant also pointed out that the excessive battery drain had nothing to do with how Facebook manages each user's location, as some users had suspected.
The new version of the Facebook app for iOS, available in Apple's App Store, should be smaller than a "bar" of battery for your iPhone.
