WiFi Speed Labels: Google has finally added to Android 8.1 the ability to see the speed rating of your Wi-Fi connection.
The reason is the WiFi Speed Labels feature that was introduced in Android 8.1, but so far we don't have more information. While it's still early to draw conclusions, this is a pretty exciting feature.
The Wi-Fi connection at least has bandwidth. It's nice to know you can watch Netflix before you try to do it pointlessly.
WiFi Speed Labels is one of those features that you don't know how useful it is until you get it. But once you use it, you won't be able to put it down. Note that since it's released with Android 8.1, those of you with older versions of the operating system may have to wait until you get it.
The idea behind the feature is very simple. Users can see the quality of their Wi-Fi connection at a glance. Currently, the four Wi-Fi labels are Slow (send texts), OK (read the news and use social media), Fast (use YouTube and other services), and Very Fast (basically, do whatever you want).
It's not an exact way to determine speed, but for now, it's the best we can offer. It's interesting to note that the provider for these ratings is Google. This means that the company has to know a specific Wi-Fi and its capabilities in order to update all the other networks, which will take some time to gather the data and send it over the network.
You can see these ratings with open Wi-Fi networks, which will improve over time. Of course, there's a way to turn this feature off. Just go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Wi-Fi Preferences > Advanced > Network and select None instead of Google.
