Ohio-based Aprecia Pharmaceuticals announced that its Spritam pill has been approved to treat epilepsy in children and adults.
Aprecia secured exclusive rights to the ZipDose technology developed at MIT, which allows pills to be printed from successive layers of the active ingredient levetiracetam.
In addition to dissolving immediately in the mouth, the new pill contains more active ingredient than a conventional pill of the same size - up to one gram.
According to the company, the porous pill is ideal for the elderly and children who have difficulty swallowing, while the high dose reduces the number of pills patients must take on a daily basis.
Following the FDA approval, Aprecia plans to leverage ZipDose in other products. Spritam, which is expected to hit the market in 2016, “is the first in a series of central nervous system products we plan to introduce,” the company said.
In the distant future, 3D printing technology could allow the production of pills tailored to the specific needs of each patient.
