Android One is a Google that aims to make very cheap Android available in markets where the purchasing power for new smartphones is not that high.
As part of the new project, the company's partners, together with OEMs, will create smartphones with very competitive prices that will run on the Android mobile platform.
Google 's Southeast Asia Managing Director Rajan Anandan says the company is set to unveil a new Android One plan in the coming weeks, and this time it aims to create smartphones that cost $50. The launch of these devices is likely to be geared towards Asian countries.
This price will make Android very accessible in emerging markets, and cheap smartphones will help realize Google's big goal of acquiring the next billion Android users.
Although Google does not manufacture the hardware that will be used in the AndroidOne project, it appears that it has tasked OEMs with defining the standards so that they can release low-cost devices.
Anandan told the Financial Times that Google is "quite committed" to the AndroidOne project and that new low-cost devices will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
