UCLA Health (at the University of California) was breached after a cyberattack and data was stolen from approximately 4,500,000 people registered on the website.
The university said Friday that a network containing personal and medical information was breached by unknown hackers, who managed to steal names, addresses, Social Security numbers and medical data - such as condition, medications, tests and test results.
However, the University stated that there is “no evidence” that the data has been compromised, although they “cannot definitively rule out the possibility.”
The health system, which operates four hospitals in Los Angeles, California, said it is working with the FBI and outside IT experts to determine the cause of the breach, which occurred in October of last year. The breach was discovered on May 5, 2015.
It is not known who or what is behind the attack, but James Atkinson, president of the UCLA hospital system, told the LA Times that it was “by a highly sophisticated group and likely offshore.”
UCLA Health confirmed that the data was not encrypted, meaning the data could be directly used by malicious users.
