Microsoft prepares to cut 7,800 jobs
The American IT group Microsoft is expected to cut 7,800 jobs, mainly in the telephony sector, and is expected to record impairment of $7.6 billion, as it announced in a press release in recent days.
These cuts concern in particular the activities taking place in the context of the acquisition of the Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia, which was finalized last year.
Microsoft will also release the $750 million to $850 million it will pay as part of the layoffs, it said.
These 7,800 jobs represent about 6.5% of the group's total workforce. Microsoft has not disclosed the geographical distribution of the layoffs.
"I do not underestimate these strategic changes, given the impact they have on the lives of the people who matter to the company," CEO Satya Nadella said in an email to employees. He said the layoffs would take place "in the coming months."
Microsoft had already eliminated 18,000 jobs last year and had decided to no longer use the Nokia logo for its smartphones.
